The Legendary Ship Graveyard of the Red Sea
Located in the northern Red Sea, near the Strait of Gubal and close to the entrance of the Gulf of Suez, Abu Nuhas Reef is one of Egypt’s most famous wreck diving destinations. Known worldwide as the “Ship Graveyard of the Red Sea”, this shallow reef became famous because several commercial ships sank after colliding with its hidden coral formations.
Today, Abu Nuhas is considered one of the most fascinating underwater locations in the Red Sea, combining dramatic shipwreck exploration, colorful coral growth, and rich marine biodiversity. Its unique history and spectacular underwater scenery make it a highlight of many Red Sea liveaboard safari routes.
A World-Famous Wreck Diving Destination
Abu Nuhas is home to four legendary shipwrecks, each offering a unique underwater adventure:
Giannis D
The Giannis D is one of the most famous and photographed wrecks in the Red Sea. The ship sank in 1983 and now rests on the reef, covered with beautiful coral formations. Divers can explore the impressive structure, including the engine room area, while enjoying the marine life that has made the wreck its home.
Carnatic
The Carnatic is one of the oldest wrecks in Abu Nuhas, sinking in 1869. Over more than a century, the wreck has become covered with colorful soft corals and surrounded by large schools of fish, creating a spectacular underwater landscape.
Chrisoula K
Known as the “Tile Wreck,” Chrisoula K sank in 1981 while transporting a cargo of Italian tiles. The wreck offers exciting exploration opportunities with large open sections and impressive coral growth, making it a favorite among wreck divers and underwater photographers.
Kimon M
The Kimon M, also known as the “Lentil Wreck,” sank in 1978 while carrying a cargo of lentils. Today, the remains of the ship provide an unforgettable wreck diving experience with a variety of marine life around the structure.
Diving Experience at Abu Nuhas
The wrecks of Abu Nuhas are located at different depths, generally ranging from approximately 15 to 30 meters, offering excellent opportunities for wreck exploration and underwater photography. With clear Red Sea visibility and unique underwater landscapes, Abu Nuhas attracts divers from around the world.
Due to possible currents and the structure of some wrecks, the site is especially suitable for Advanced Open Water divers and experienced wreck divers.
Marine Life Around Abu Nuhas
Although Abu Nuhas is famous for its legendary shipwrecks, the surrounding reef is also home to a variety of Red Sea marine life. Divers can encounter colorful reef fish, glassfish, moray eels, lionfish, and other species living around the wrecks and coral formations.
Over the years, the sunken ships have become artificial reefs, creating a unique underwater environment full of life and beauty.
