Daedalus Reef

A World-Class Shark Diving Destination in the Southern Red Sea

Located in the southern Red Sea, approximately 80 kilometers offshore from Marsa Alam, Daedalus Reef is one of Egypt’s most famous and remote diving destinations. This isolated offshore reef is part of the Egyptian marine protected areas and is considered one of the most spectacular dive sites in the Red Sea.

Accessible mainly by liveaboard safari, Daedalus Reef is famous for its dramatic wall dives, strong currents, pristine coral formations, and unforgettable encounters with large pelagic species. Its remote location in the open sea creates an exceptional underwater environment that attracts experienced divers from around the world.

The Daedalus Reef Lighthouse

The reef is easily recognized by its historic lighthouse, built in 1863 and later rebuilt to guide ships navigating through the Red Sea. Standing in the middle of the open ocean, the lighthouse has become an iconic symbol of Daedalus Reef and one of the most recognizable landmarks of Southern Red Sea diving.

Diving Experience at Daedalus Reef

Daedalus Reef offers some of the most exciting wall diving experiences in Egypt. The reef walls drop vertically into the deep blue, creating perfect conditions for encounters with passing pelagic species.

Divers can explore colorful coral walls, large sea fans, and impressive underwater landscapes while enjoying excellent visibility and the feeling of diving in a truly remote ocean environment.

Due to its offshore location, strong currents, and challenging conditions, Daedalus Reef is recommended for Advanced Open Water divers and experienced drift divers with good buoyancy control and current experience.

Marine Life Around Daedalus Reef

Daedalus Reef is internationally famous for encounters with large pelagic marine life. Divers may encounter:

- Hammerhead Sharks

- Oceanic Whitetip Sharks

- Grey Reef Sharks

- Thresher Sharks (occasionally)

- Tuna and Barracudas

- Giant Trevallies

- Napoleon Wrasse

- Large schools of reef fish

The reef is also covered with beautiful hard corals, soft corals, and large sea fans, creating a rich underwater ecosystem full of color and life.

Best Time to Dive Daedalus Reef

Daedalus Reef can be visited throughout the diving season, with different times of the year offering different marine encounters. The summer and autumn months are often considered excellent periods for pelagic sightings, especially shark encounters.

Because of its remote offshore location and changing sea conditions, liveaboard safaris provide the best and safest way to experience Daedalus Reef.
